Chapter Fifteen

David walked into Harlow House and scanned the foyer. He’d brought Smith and Ramirez with him but started to wish he hadn’t when he saw Vonny sitting at the front desk watching him with a smirk.

David suppressed a weary sigh as they approached. He had spent the morning dealing with a few of the out-of-town guests and then Ree Hedgewick’s bail. It’s not like there was nothing else to be done and he really wasn’t in the mood for Vonny’s somewhat childish sense of humor.

He was only there at all because Alfie had slipped out and returned home without clearance yesterday. There were only a few things he wanted to ask him but he was hopeful the eccentric man could lend a little insight.

“Good morning, Miss Harlow,” he said.

“Hey, Captain.” She smiled knowingly and glanced at the men behind him. “Gentleman...and Greg.”

He didn’t turn to see for certain but he was confident that Smith would have made some sort of mocking face in reply to her rude greeting. He didn’t care, he had neither the time or the inclination to be waylaid by spats.

“I need to speak with your father.” He kept his tone polite.

“Sure thing, Captain.” She was still smirking obnoxiously as she glanced over to the partially open office door and called out. “Dad! Captain McAlister’s back!”

From the depths of the room they could hear papers shuffling and the wheels of an office chair creaking.

“I know, he came to the wedding,” Alfie scoffed loudly. “About time he started making an effort with your sister. I was starting to wonder if the fool needed glasses!”

“No, Dad,” Vonny grinned and barely held back her laughter. “He’s here right now.”

The creaking of wheels resounded again as Alfie rolled his chair to the doorway and peered out.

“Hmm?” Alfie grunted and still didn’t bother to stand as he saw David watching him with a grim frown. “Oh, you should’ve called, young man. Maiden’s not here at the moment.”

“I need to speak with you, Mr. Harlow,” David said with as much calm and dignity as he could manage. “I have to ask you a few questions.”

“That’s a bit sudden! Have you even taken her out yet?” Alfie scowled deeply and pointed a finger at him. “The answer’s no!”

“Oh my—” David covered his mortified exclamation by running his hands over his face, he glanced over his shoulder at his sniggering officers. “Wait outside, and keep your mouths shut.”

Smith and Ramirez didn’t dare to argue but Alfie spotted them before they could escape.

“Gregory!” he said sharply. “Tell your father he still has my spokeshave, I need it back if he’s done with it.”

“Will do, Mr. Harlow,” Greg giggled as he ducked outside.

Vonny was watching the exchange with considerable enjoyment until Alfie waved her out of the room as well. She pulled a sulky face but still slipped off into the dining room.

When they were alone, a quietly smiling Alfie pushed to his feet and walked over to face him.

“How can I help you, young man?” he asked placidly as he stacked his hands atop the desk.
